YRC Freight Claims Prevention Coordinator in Overland Park, Kansas


The Claims Prevention Coordinator will be responsible for activities and initiatives that will contribute toward the reduction or prevention of cargo claims. Provide training for system-wide Over, Short and Damaged (OS&D) practices and established procedures. Audit and monitor compliance of YRC policies and procedures. Conduct problem-solving activities related to loss and damage claims and investigations of lost high-value shipments. Identify repetitive overage, shortage and damage accounts, and lead efforts toward claim prevention and reduction.


  1. Train terminal field employees, via phone, on all aspects of company OS&D procedures, and ensure compliance by performing audits on the facility’s OS&D processes. Report findings to Division, Area, and Local management.

  2. Oversee claim reduction efforts with terminal field personnel. Identify and monitor repetitive failures in over, short and damaged at assigned facilities.

  3. Initiate and coordinate claim reduction initiatives, understanding characteristics unique to individual service centers and their customers.

  4. Investigate OS&D claims to gather all required documentation, communication with terminal or customer and make the decision on the outcome of claim using independent discretion.

  5. Identify priority overages, shortages and damages and direct efforts to rectify, with the goal of satisfying internal and external customers and minimizing company liability.

  6. Conduct high dollar over, short and damaged pre-claim

  7. Maintain internal and external customer relations while assisting customers with over, short, damaged and on hand shipments.

  8. Work with Operations, Area Offices, Account Execs, CAMs, Environmental Services, Line Haul, Dock Supervisors, CSRs, Trade Show Coordinators and Terminal and Distribution Center Managers to satisfy the needs of service based OS&D issues.

  9. Travel to train field OS&D personnel, work with terminals behind in OS&D processing get up to date, audit terminal OS&D and conduct office management training.

  1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in related area.

  2. Thorough understanding of common carrier freight flow and terminal and distribution center operations.

  3. Demonstrated analytic and problem-solving

  4. Ability to perform effectively under pressure, prioritize and delegate work.

  5. Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

  6. Experience using MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint).

  7. Travel up to 10% of the time.


  1. Experience working or managing OS&D at the terminal level.

  2. Ability to gather information from a variety of sources, make timely decisions then communicate those decisions to appropriate individuals.

  3. Group training experience.

  4. Working knowledge of freight loss and damage laws and regulations.


This job operates in a professional office environment indoors. Routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.


The position requires the ability to spend long hours sitting or standing while using office equipment and computers. Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as typing and keying. Occasional lifting, pushing/pulling, carrying 10 lbs of supplies and materials is required.
